Squadron mode is best planned as a team composition problem: one or two damage anchors, cooldown/range support, a durable unit if pressure is high, and enough economy to place upgrades early.

Use Team Builder first, then compare candidate units by DPS, range, cost and passive tags. A stronger single unit can still underperform if its cost delays the whole squad.

For rewards, prefer the mode only when it gives a unique material, better quantity or better chance than normal Story farming. Item detail pages show those overlaps automatically.
